Pants or trousers. Depends if you prefer the American or the British term for it. A derivative of the old pantaloons, Pantaloon being an Anglicization of “Pantalone” which was apparently the name of an Italian comedic character in the 18^th century. I will be using pants since it is just shorter to type.

Despite the ubiquitous sightings of pants in these modern times, on both genders, pants are a surprisingly recent addition to the working wardrobe. Before the introduction of pants men used to wear togas (yes, that far back). Greek recorded history seems to indicate that the Persians and Central Asians invented the pants for better horse riding. Due to the spread of civilization via war and military operations (the irony is as thick as a pair of corduroy pants), pants were a natural progression for the ergonomics of proper horse riding and presumably efficient killing of your enemy. Horse riding also birthed the high heel shoes and for the men first! That is another story for another day though.

Pant are an essential staple of the wardrobe for both practical and legal reasons. Worn as either part of a suit or as separates, indispensable really. Pants of course have evolved and developed quite a bit. Many variations and it was Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, who set the trend for trousers as we know them today. He was also the figure who took trousers creases into the mainstream. Previously, pants or trousers as they were called in the U.K., were styled with front pleats and leg cuffs. World war II was the catalyst for streamlining the pants into the more commonly seen flat fronted, no cuff look we see these days.
